Greetings from the new Executive Committee of the PIM Professionals Association, appointed at the AGM on 10th September 2007. The AGM and post AGM Ceremony to felicitate Dr Liyanage on his appointment as the Director of PIM received an overwhelming response from our membership, where more than 100 members gathered at the Trans Asia Hotel. We re-launched our official website - http://www.pimalumni.org - which will be updated regularly with alumni information. This website has facilities for PIM graduates to obtain membership in the alumni, join sub committees as well as to check Alumni News letter among host of other features. At the inaugural meeting of the Executive Committee, following sub committees were formed to organize alumni activities on the direction provided by Dr Liyanage to facilitate "Development & Networking" of Members. If you wish to join these committees, please contact the Chairman or the Secretary of the respective committee to express your interest before 2nd October 2007.

President's post AGM speech
Dear Dr. Uditha Liyanage, Members of the PIM Faculty, Distinguished Invitees, Dear Friends.
It is a historical day to our Association, where we felicitate Dr Uditha Liyanage, Director of PIM, who is taking over this great Institute for further height, after the founder Director, Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara.
It is appropriate for us to remember our founder Director, Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara and, all those who positively contributed towards development of PIM to it’s current level. All of you may have already learnt the latest achievement of the PIM- expanding its wings in the global education sector by having its first overseas faculty in Dubai. Prof. Nanayakkara is currently facing new challenges in setting up same, and, let us wish him all the best and hope that, PIM will be a great International Institute.
I as a student at PIM, I developed a greater liking towards the subject, “marketing” having attended Dr. Liyanage’s lecturers and never wanted to miss any of his lecturers. If I am not mistaken, I got highest marks for International Marketing, to other subjects. Most of you gathered here would agree, that Dr. Liyanage is one of the best marketing lecturers, we ever had. No doubt, he is a well respected marketer in the country, who has challenged traditions.
Dear Sir, it is a great pleasure and honor to felicitate you today, and I must thank the immediate Past President and his team for organizing this event, in this evening. As the Alumni of PIM, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors and assure you our continuous support in carrying out all the good work, you are planning to put into work.
Sir, we seek your guidance and assistance, to implement our plans for the next year. We are sure that you will advice us to improve our plans in line with yours, to develop PIM further. Also, we seek the guidance and assistance, as in the past, from the faculty members too, in this direction.
On behalf of our members, let me thank Dr Liyanage, for accepting our invitation and being here with us today, honoring our Association. Also, may I thank the members of PIM faculty, invitees and our members, who honored Dr. Liyanage, by their presence today.
I wish you all the best and a pleasant evening!
Thank You!

Use the power of the Internet to build the Broad network
The PIM Alumni newsletter, will keep you up-to-date on important happenings within the alumni community. You must be a registered member of the Alumni Association to receive the current edition of "Alumni Activities" either through the mail.
In these tight budget times, email and Internet communications are providing the no printing, no postage vehicle to reach our alumni. But our reach is only as good as our e-distribution.
You can help! Whether it's passing along this e-newletter link to your alumni network with your own comments on programs and events, or sending us the newsletter's view (sananthv@gmail.com ) will be an immense rally round. Please help us promote the newsletter and urge alumni to frequently visit the website at http://www.pimalumni.org/.
Thank you for your patience.

PIM Alumni adopts its original name
New name - same great tradition! That was the consensus among alumni who attended the post AGM ceremony on the 10th of September. In fact it is not a new name but bouncing back to the original name to be precise. The association reverted back to its original name as “PIM Alumni”.
The highlight of the post AGM ceremony was the felicitation of Dr Uditha Liyanage in recognition of him being appointed as the Director of PIM and the Chairman of the Institute’s Board of Management followed by the re-launch of the Alumni website (http://www.pimalumni.org/).
The post AGM ceremony set itself a new record with more than one hundred Alumni members being present. So much was the crowd that at a certain point seats became a scarce resource. The session began with the introductory speech by the incoming President Lakshman Abeysekera who thanked the alumni members for there continuous support.
This was followed by an introduction to Dr Uditha Liyanage by the immediate past president. Incidentally, Brandon Morris who was the master of ceremony had noticed that Dr Liyanage is looking younger by the day.
This myth was clarified by Dr Lyanage in his speech, where he attributed his success to look younger to packaging rather than anything else. Dr Liyanage clearly outlined his strategy to take PIM forward. He also emphasized the important role played by the Alumni.
This was followed by cocktails which ultimately ended with the membership taking the role of the live band!

Director's AGM message
Development and Networking
DAN is the "Mantra", I propose for the newly elected committee of PIM Alumni. It will do well to perform the twin tasks of Development and Networking which, in fact spells the scope of PIM’s Alumni Association, the PIMA.The MBA program is tough but rewarding – two full years of striking a delicate balance among work, study and life. At the end of the program, many believe erroneously that the learning process is, by and large, over and that, that which follows is merely incremental and additive. They fail to recognize the fact that a profession is for life, and the learning that underpins professional development is indeed, continuous. The first task, I wish to recommend to the new committee is to focus on CPD - continuous professional development, exclusively for the Alumni of our great institute. Continuous learning entails, new learning, and very often, unlearning of that which seemed axiomatic. Hence, regular programs on emergent topics, and issues of importance must be laid bare before a captive grouping of our progressive MBA’s.Development is one. Networking is another, that should draw the attention of our Alumni. We have over 2,500 managers who have completed postgraduate programs of study at PIM. Many of them are at the helm of their respective organizations – CEOs, heads of departments and business units. Bringing them together in one forum, is to create one that has both clout and credibility. The networking that ensues will help the individual members, while at the same time, project a vivid and positive image of PIM. Afterall, in the final analysis, an MBA program is as good as its Alumni. That is the acid test, and we can justifiably be proud of our crop!!Development and Networking need not necessarily be distinct and separate. When they come together in one event, as two inseparable facets, you will not only kill two birds with one stone, as it were, but also, synergize the two, with great effect.I wish you well in your developmental and networking endeavours in the year ahead.Dr. Uditha Liyanage Director, PIM

AGM 2006/07 Treasurer's Message
I am pleased to present to you the accounts of your association for the year ended 31 December 2006.
During the year under review, the association recorded a net expenditure over income of Rs 710,444. The decline was primarily due to decrease in the income. The total income of Rs 655,112 was a decrease of 66% compared to the previous financial year. Main contributory factor for this decline had been the decrease in the main income source “Developing managers for the future” training programmes. Number of programmes conducted was limited to two and the numbers of participants were reduced compared to the previous year.
However, despite the dip in the income, the association continuously provided services to its stakeholders, without curtailing the expenditure and limiting the activities.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors and participants of our training programmes. I also take this opportunity to place on record our sincere appreciation to the Auditors BDO Burah Hathy – Chartered Accountants for offering their valuable services free of charge.
I wish the association to work to its fullest capacity and potential for ensuring future growth and expansion in an effort to enhance stakeholder value.
Thank You

AGM 2006/07 President's Message
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the AGM of our association for the year 2006/07. It’s another 12-month term during which we had taken many leaps forward towards our vision “To be the most sought after Professional Association in Sri Lanka”. As all the members know, PIM Professionals Association is not just another Alumni in which the members meet once a year at an AGM where they change the faces of President and the executive committee. We perform on a different platform with distinctive objectives. Our target audience falls in to three segments. The first segment represents our own membership. This covers both existing and potential members. The next segment is the PIM, the institution, which paved the way for us to develop skills to receive the real recognition among professionals in the country. The last segment is the society within which we all live. The activities we carry out each year always address the needs of these three segments. Within that perspective I would like to outline the activities we have carried out in the year 2006/07.
· “Developing Managers for the Future” Training Programme
We have successfully conducted two programmes in which there were more than 100 participants in total. There were three award ceremonies for the participants of these programmes out of which one was for a programme conducted in year 2005/06. Another programme was commenced on 22nd August 2007.
· Corporate Programmes
Many corporate entities showed keen interest in the “Developing Managers for the Future” programme and inquired of the possibility of tailor made programmes. In line with this, the first of such programme focusing on Managerial Competency Development was held at Sampath Bank for the Junior Executives. Further programmes are in the pipeline for Sampath Bank, Sri Lanka Telecom and Ceylon Tobacco.
· Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) membership
The committee aggressively canvassed to obtain the membership of OPA. All the criteria for the membership have been met. A few amendments to the constitution are required and are to be addressed in the coming AGM.
· Capability Development of Members
We encouraged members to develop their lecturing capabilities by inviting them to become resource persons in the “Developing Managers for the Future” training programme. The members who accepted the invitation provided their service up to full satisfaction of the participants.
· Association Website
A new website exclusively for the membership was developed keeping in mind the growing needs of the Association. Specific focus was given to members who are living outside Sri Lanka. Key aspects like Association newsletter, career center and online application and related forms will be included. The new website will be launched after the AGM.
· Fellowship Activities
The members were given the opportunity to meet each other and renew the relationships in two get-togethers. These events took place along with the award ceremonies of “Developing Managers for the Future” training programmes.
· B2B Network Meeting
During the latter part of our term we successfully organized two B2B Network meetings in which few members delivered presentations, introducing their products and services to the membership with special benefits.
· Member Directory
The committee for the first time printed a comprehensive member directory with the updated profiles of members.
I would like to express our gratitude to Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara, the founder director of PIM and our Patron for his sincere guidance extended to the Association to carry out the above activities. I also would like to thank Dr Uditha Liyanage for his assistance when ever the committee wanted. I would also be thankful to my executive committee and the administrative secretary of the Association, Anne Ranasinghe for the support given to me during my tenure as the President of the Association. I also convey my deepest appreciation to all the members who contributed in numerous ways towards the development of our association.
Finally I wish all the best to the new President and the executive committee.

PIM goes overseas
The Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) which pioneered the MBA Program in Sri Lanka over two decades ago has now extended its operations to the Emirates.
The PIM International Centre located in Dubai will commence its inaugural MBA Program on September 15, this year. The self-same MBA Program, conducted in Colombo, will be delivered in its International Centre. The PIM’s MBA Program has earned the reputation of making business-learning action oriented, and has over the years, produced more than 2,500 MBA’s, who occupy key positions in the country’s private and public sectors. In fact, a large number of CEOs, heads of departments and business units of leading organizations are alumni of PIM. The regionally competitive PIM’s MBA Program develops managerial competencies in five key areas and prepares managers to take on key positions of leadership in organizations.
Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara, founder Director of PIM, in addition to being the Senior Professor of Management at PIM Colombo, will be chiefly engaged in setting up the PIM International Centre, and launch its inaugural program. This is another pioneering effort of PIM, and a “first” in the country’s university system.
